Mao’er Township of Huayuan County, based on local conditions, introduced Hunan Gaoshan Yuzhu Ecological Agriculture Company in 2023, in order to revitalize idle resources, strengthen the village collective economy, and inject new vitality into the economic development of the township.
The company converted the idle silkworm shed in Pai’er Village into a Yuzhu (polygonatum odoratum) processing plant and introduced a complete processing production line. It was put into operation in September this year and can process 2,000 kilograms of Yuzhu per day at full capacity.
At present, it has developed preliminarily processed products such as Yuzhu slices and tea. The annual income of the village collective economy increases by 8,000 yuan from venue rental fees and more than 100 jobs will be provided for surrounding villagers.
Mao’er Township has already planted more than 200 mu (about 13.33 hectares) of Yuzhu. It has planned to plant nearly 1,000 mu (about 66.67 hectares) of Yuzhu next year. It takes 2 to 3 years for Yuzhu from planting to harvesting.
The yield per mu (about 0.067 hectares) is about 2,500 kilograms after two years and can reach 5,000 kilograms after three years. According to the market price, it can achieve an output value of 30,000 to 60,000 yuan per mu (about 0.067 hectares).
Yuzhu, as a traditional Chinese medicinal herb with extremely high nutritional value and pharmacological effects, plays an important role in the market. After processed, it can be bagged to meet consumers’ daily needs, or packaged in exquisite gift boxes for relatives and friends. Hunan Gaoshan Yuzhu Ecological Agriculture Company, with stable sales channels, will explore a broader market for high-quality Yuzhu.
Mao’er Township will increase efforts to promote investment, improve the industrial chain, and enhance the market competitiveness of the Yuzhu industry to make it a shining brand for the economic development of Mao’er Township.
